Canberra and Wellington feature on new Singapore Airlines route

CanberraWellingtonA new 'Capital Express' route being launched by Singapore Airlines will service both Canberra and Wellington, with planned flights operating four times a week connecting the capitals of Australia and New Zealand.

The new flights from Singapore, which are still subject to regulatory approval, will start on

20 September and route via Canberra and Wellington, meaning the airline will be the first carrier that has flights between the two cities.

Close ties

266-seat retrofitted Boeing 777-200s will fly the new route, which perhaps surprisingly, will see Singapore Airlines become be the first airline to operate regularly scheduled international services to and from Canberra. The aircraft will be fitted with 38 Business Class seats and 228 Economy Class seats.

Chief Executive of Singapore Airlines, Goh Choon Phong, commented: “This new service linking Singapore, Canberra and Wellington reflects the close ties between the three countries.

“We are excited about the prospects for our new ‘Capital Express’ route, which we are confident, will appeal to leisure, government and corporate travellers.”

Staggered roll out

For British travellers looking to take advantage of the new service, flights will be rolled out for booking on a progressive basis, first through the Singapore Airlines website, then call centres and travel agents over the coming weeks.

Singapore Airlines already has an extensive Australian network, and many visitors from the UK and Europe choose to have a stopover in Singapore to break up the journey. The airline's new Canberra services will add to an itinerary that currently includes flights between Singapore and Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

The carrier's subsidiary SilkAir also flies to Cairns and Darwin and an established partnership with Virgin Australia means Singapore Airlines’ overall network actually extends to a further 40 codeshare destinations.

Convenient travel options

The new Wellington services will complement the airline's current services that are already in place between Singapore and both Auckland and Christchurch.

“We are especially pleased to be bringing more convenient travel options to customers with Canberra's first regularly scheduled international flights and the first non-stop links between the capitals of Australia and New Zealand,” Choon Phong concluded.
