Luton Airport breaks own records
London Luton Airport (LLA) has announced that it broke its own record for traveller numbers last year, marking it out as the busiest in the airport’s 77 year history.
A favourite of many British holidaymakers for its convenient location, Luton has an extensive upgrade plan in place that should see it enter an even more successful era.
12 million passengers
In excess of 12 million passengers travelled through the airport during 2015, representing annual growth of 16.9% when compared to the year before.
In fact, LLA performed so well over the past twelve year that it recorded double digit growth in every month throughout the year, reaching a peak of 18.9% in December.
These impressive statistics mean that Luton was the fastest growing in percentage terms of all four major London airports last year.
A major makeover
The airport is currently undergoing an extensive refit and makeover to meet the increase in passenger demand.
The redevelopment is a project worth £110m which will be completed in 2020, at which time it's estimated that capacity will have increased by 50% from today's 12 million figure to 18 million passengers.
Major upgrades to the facilities and infrastructure include a doubling of the existing retail space as well as the building of a new multi-storey car park that will be able to cater for 1,700 vehicles.
Chief Executive of LLA, Nick Barton, said: “With more than 12 million passengers passing through the airport, 2015 was a record year. But while 2015 was the busiest year in our history, 2016 is set to be the most exciting as our £110 million investment transforms the experience for our passengers.”
One of the driving factors behind the growth of Luton is the new routes that have opened with established airlines and also the arrival of four new airlines. In total, 20 new routes were introduced during the course of 2015.
Barton commented: “The recent announcement that airlines Vueling and Transavia will both begin flights this year shows that demand is continuing to grow.”
