USA is top of 2016 holiday wishlist for UK travellers

USAA new study has revealed that the USA is the most popular place that Brits want to visit in 2016.

Almost a third of those who took part in a Travelzoo poll named the country as being at the top of their wishlist for this year. The research also reflected the way that long-haul travel is continuing to attract the interest of more British holidaymakers than ever before.

Long haul

The travel deals company found that the USA was the most desirable holiday destination for Brits while Italy came a very close second with 31% of respondents choosing it as their favourite.

Staycations came third, with 30% intending to holiday in the UK and long term favourite Spain was in fourth place, being named by a quarter of those polled. France and Greece claimed fifth and sixth place polling 18% and 16% respectively.

More popular long haul destinations including the Caribbean (15%), Australia (15%) and Canada (12%) made up the rest of the top ten alongside Portugal in ninth place.

Habits are changing

“British travel habits are changing and 2016 is very much looking to be the 'year of the US', with record levels of interest in holidays to both the East and West Coast,” explained Travelzoo’s Louise Hodges.

She added that America has overtaken European favourites such as Italy, France and Spain for the first time when it comes to picking a desirable destination.

“With four long-haul destinations now in the top 10 and airlines opening up new travel routes that take advantage of the lower cost of fuel, we expect to see long-haul destinations continuing to grow in popularity in 2016,” Hodges explained.

Consumer confidence

The US and Western Europe may be benefiting from a lack of consumer confidence for booking holidays to some North African destinations, as 80% of those polled said events last year caused them to change travel plans for 2016.

A fifth (20%) of British holidaymakers in the study said that concerns over safety means they will spend more time considering which airline and travel routes they choose.
