Revealed: The top ten destinations for 2016

The top ten destinations for 2016
Brits wanting to travel to the hippest and most popular destinations next year can now find out exactly which locations are trending.

Trivago, the hotel search engine website, has announced its Top 10 emerging places for the coming year after researching which overseas resorts, regions and cities were searched for online during 2015 and comparing the results to those made in 2014.

Top spots

Lapland in the north of Finland claimed top spot in Trivago's results. A popular destination for those hoping to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and famous for its 24 hours of sunlight during the summer time had over a 300% increase in searches during 2015 compared to last year.

With travel restrictions to Cuba being lifted during the last quarter of 2014, it should come as no surprise that the capital Havana claimed second place with a 200% increase in searches.

Known to many the world over as Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista in Florida caps off the top three places. Enjoying nearly a 130% increase, it seems that Brits are not tiring of Disney hotels and the lure of the Florida sunshine.

“The real surprise is such a steep increase in searches to Lapland, suggesting that both winter travel and travel to see the Northern Lights are enjoying an upward trend,” explained the website's Denise Bartlett, Public Relations UK & Ireland.

“Finally, the inclusion of a Disney resort city in the top could suggest two things: either more people are visiting Disney, or more people are using a price comparison site to do so – rather than booking packages directly with Disney.”

A range of prices

Destinations in France, Spain, Germany and Greece complete the rest of the top ten destinations for 2016, including holiday hot spots such as Stuttgart, Agios Nikolaos, Puerto de Alcudia and Marseille.

However, it's interesting to note that average room rates range from £52 per night in Las Palma, Gran Canaria to £250 for a night in Saint-Tropez, meaning there’s something to suit every budget.
