Revealed: Brits would jump at the chance to spend Christmas in the sun

Christmas in sunIn a change from the usual favoured festive destinations such as Norway and Alaska, a large amount of Brits would gladly swap their traditional family Christmas traditions for holiday in the sun.

That’s according to a new report from Cruise118.com that has thrown up a few surprising results.

Christmas in the Canaries

The report's results are backed up by bookings data that shows that spending Christmas in the Canary Islands is the most popular choice this year, replacing more festive picture postcard snowy destinations.

According to the report, in order to escape the ritual stresses of the festive period, regardless of whether people already had family Christmas plans, just under a third would cancel them if they had the chance to book a last-minute getaway.

Shaking things up and trying something different

Commenting on the reasons why more and more Brits are choosing to spend Christmas away from home, Cruise118.com's Managing Director, James Cole, explained that the traditional cold and wet UK weather along with the overall stress and expense of Christmas were major contributing factors.

“For too long, many of us have been bound by tradition and family ties at Christmas, but our survey results and booking data show that more people are happy to scrap their plans at the eleventh hour in order to make a late getaway,” he said. “It’s not just adventurous couples and single travellers who are packing their bags and heading abroad on a moment’s notice. This year we’ve seen a lot more families making a last-ditch decision to book an exciting Christmas holiday.”

Choosing sunshine rather than snow

Booking data from the cruise retailer showed that some Brits do still harbour the desire for a romantic Christmas, however things are changing with many choosing sunshine over snow.

With the majority of late last-minute getaways being booked in November, the retailer's figures showed that they received none for either Alaska or Norway, the so-called ‘snowy destinations’.

Instead 63% chose to book a Christmas holiday in the Canary Islands and 21% opted for the chance to visit the Caribbean.
