UK airlines prepare for busy Christmas period

UK airlines are gearing up for what could be a record breaking festive period with millions of passengers expected to fly between now and the end of the year.

Avoiding the Christmas rush

In a bid to refrain from getting caught up in the Christmas Eve rush, it's reported that over 204,000 passengers are expected to travel on more than 1,300 easyJet flights this coming Friday, 18 December.

The low-cost airline envisages it to be the busiest Christmas travelling day in their history and they are set to break even more records when 2.5 million passengers will fly on their across their network between 17 December this year and 4 January 2016.

Christmas Day service

Over 450 British Airways pilots together with more than 3,400 members of cabin crew are predicted to be flying 32,000 passengers to destinations all around the globe on Christmas Day this year.

Brits travelling with British Airways on 25 December can expect a special festive in-flight experience as cabin crew will be serving a grand total of 0.5 tonnes of turkey, 150kg of stuffing and 15,000 Brussel sprouts. The main meal will be followed by desert of mince pies and traditional Christmas puddings.

BA staff, of which there will be over 10,000 cabin crew on duty from Christmas Eve to New Years Eve, will also be keeping their own traditions alive throughout the festive period.

One member of the airline's cabin crew, Sacha Robertson, said: “We always make a fuss on board, wearing things like reindeer antlers and tinsel.”

Spending Christmas at home

Starting on Friday and continuing through to Christmas Eve, the number of passengers on domestic UK flights is expected to reach 135,000 as people head home for Christmas.

easyJet's Director, UK Market, Sophie Dekkers, said: “We are seeing high demand across our entire network of more than 750 routes on Friday 18 December as more people than ever before are flying either home or on holiday with us this Christmas in what will be our busiest Christmas ever.
