Strong pound mean bargain skiing for Brits
The current strength of the pound against other major currencies means that hitting the slopes is really good value this year for Brits who like some snow mixed in with their winter sun.
Prices are down on last year and that means a holiday on the slopes is as big a bargain for Brits as it has ever been before, according to the Post Office Travel Money Ski Resort, produced in association with Crystal Ski Holidays.
In Austria the hugely popular world class resort of Kitzbuhel has seen the biggest price fall, down 15% on last year. Further afield, Canada's Olympic-class resort Whistler is 13.9% cheaper than last winter.
However, the cheapest place for a winter break is Banskoat in Bulgaria where only £259 will get you out on the slopes.
24 out of 27
The effects of a buoyant Sterling means that many different destinations have actually dropped in price, with the cost of hitting the slopes falling in 24 out of 27 resorts across Europe and North America.
This doesn't just mean cheaper flights or accommodation, but also includes the costs of equipment hire, lift passes, ski instruction and food and drink too.
Another major destination that offers great value is the popular French resort of Les Deux Alpes, where a winter trip this year will set Brits back 13.5% less than it did this time last year.
Post Office Travel Money's Andrew Brown commented: “Skiers heading to many resorts in Europe will benefit from sterling's increased strength.
“This means that even where local prices have edged up, UK tourists will find the cost of skiing as well as meals and drinks noticeably cheaper this winter.”
The good value extends to the higher end world class resorts too, with Sestriere being rated the cheapest in its class for the third consecutive year.
Brown did have one word of warning for those planning a trip to Switzerland. “Bargain-hunters should exercise caution when considering Swiss resorts as sterling has not strengthened enough to counteract the effect of rising local prices,” he pointed out.
