Virgin Trains gets commuters in the festive mood

Anyone travelling by train during December can expect their journeys to be full of festive spirit as Virgin Trains unveiled a set of Christmas carriages at London's iconic King's Cross station this week.

Replacing the instantly recognisable red of Virgin, Christmas trains in a striking blue will liven up journeys across the country on both the West and East Coast of Virgin Trains' network.

Festive trains

Turning hundreds of heads at King's Cross station, passengers were introduced to a ‘Claus 91’ replacing a Class 91 while a Pendolino metamorphosed into a Penguilino.

The transformations marked the end of a competition between primary school children across the nation who were asked to design a Christmas train. Madeleine Deakin, 11, and Amber Maxfield, two years her junior, were the joint winners and were at Kings Cross Station to see their drawings come to life.

The competition was run in partnership with the Book Trust and the two successful entries were chosen out of hundreds of submissions.

Author of the popular Worst Witch and The Large Family series, Jill Murphy, headed the judging panel and the quality of the contestants was so high that they had to award the prize to two winners.

‘‘I am honoured to have been part of this exciting project," Murphy said. “We received so many wonderful entries and Madeleine and Amber’s designs stood out as fun designs with a real Christmas feel to them.”

Designs in action

Both of the Christmas trains carry the name of the winning designer. The Penguilino will run on the West Coast and the Claus 91 on the East Coast and although the children's designs are very different, the trains both share the same midnight blue sky backdrop.

Virgin Trains chairman Patrick McCall said: “We loved the concepts that these two young designers came up with and are proud to have their ideas transform two trains.”

“It’s fantastic that both the East Coast and West Coast services have come together to make our customers’ journeys throughout December extra special – especially on their way home for Christmas” he added.

If you're planning on travelling by train this Christmas, it’s important to ensure you have your Family Travel Insurance organised before you go.
