Norwegian Air Shuttle named most fuel efficient transatlantic service

Red PlaneNorwegian Air Shuttle has been named as the most fuel-efficient airline that flies between Europe and the US and Canada, according to a new study.

The study from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) placed Air Berlin and Ireland's Aer Lingus in second and third place respectively.

It focuses on the burning of fuels and carbon emissions in a bid to encourage better efficiency among leading airlines.

A spokeswoman for Norwegian praised their fleet of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners for having 20% lower fuel consumption per passenger compared to similar-sized aircraft operated by other airlines.

“The biggest contribution airlines can make to lowering emissions is investing in new generation, fuel efficient aircraft,” she explained.

“Norwegian already has one of the youngest fleets in the world with an average age of four years old, and will continue to phase out older aircraft as new aircraft arrive.”

The environmental think tank's research found that American and British legacy carriers were performing badly even though Brits favourite British Airways, Scandinavian airline SAS and German carrier Lufthansa between them account for more than 20% of all transatlantic air travel.

The ICCT report will be taken extremely seriously as they were instrumental in helping to uncover the Volkswagen pollution cheating scandal.

UK flagship airline BA was revealed to use more than 50% more fuel than its most efficient rival, with Lufthansa and SAS also showing room for improvement on transatlantic routes.

A spokeswoman for BA said that a study into global operations is needed to paint a fairer picture, as focusing on one region is not a fair reflection.

“We are very proud of our environmental performance and take our environmental responsibilities very seriously,” she explained.

She added that BA has plans to introduce a number of more fuel efficient aircraft by the end of 2016, including 12 A380s and 24 787s, with a further 18 to follow that.

Whichever carrier you are flying with, it’s important to ensure you have your budget travel insurance organised before you go.
