Canary Islands becomes a winter favourite for Northern Brits

Swimming PoolNorthern Brits have made more bookings to the Canary Islands for December than any other nation, according to a recent report.

The travel retailer Holiday Hypermarket, analysed their booking data and revealed that 73% of the holidaymakers that booked trips to the beautiful Canary Islands were from the North of England.

Regional differences

Interestingly, the Brits from the Midlands were less impressed with the islands, with just 21% booking trips to the region before the end of the year.

However, it was the Southerners that showed very little interest in the Canary Islands, as just 17% chose to travel to the destination before New Year.

Overall, bookings to the stunning Canary Islands were up 72% year on year.

This report follows on from a study from the tourist body, Exceltur, which found that the summer of 2015 was actually the best for the Spanish tourist industry in the past 10 years.

Ian Crawford, Representative from Holiday Hypermarket, said that Spain is an obvious choice for many families as they opt to stay closer to home.

The Canaries have always been a popular destination for Brits, but these results are “quite surprising”, he added.

Brits heading abroad later in the year

Mr Crawford also noted that while London accounts for 20% of the islands customers, it was a surprise to see such a big regional difference.

While the South of England didn’t see a huge percentage of holidaymakers heading to the Canary Islands, plenty did show a huge interest in Cape Verde – with bookings up by 129% from 2014.

Likewise, those from the Midlands demonstrated a clear preference for Mexico, with the number of travellers flying to the region shooting up by a huge 293% year on year.

Over the past few years the UK has seen the British summer disappear earlier and milder weather hitting around October and November, ultimately leading to autumn getaways being delayed until the end of the year, Mr Crawford concluded.
