International passenger demand rises in September

AirportMore international passengers are boarding planes set to take off around the world, according to a recent report.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) revealed that the number of global passengers taking off show a year-on-year rise in demand during September.

A robust increase

In fact, the total revenue passenger kilometres increased by 7.3% in September, compared to the 7.1% recorded in August.

Meanwhile, the number of seats taken up in September also increased by 6.6% compared to 12 months ago, while the load rose 0.5% to 80.7%.

Tony Tyler, Director General and CEO at IATA, said that the demand for travel during September was “robust”, despite the economic slowdown in a number of key markets – including China – revealing the sector is set to achieve a positive conclusion to 2015.

International passenger demand also increased by 7% compared to September in 2014, with all airlines across the world recording growth. This therefore led to total capacity climbing to a whopping 6.9% increase.

Domestic travel on the up

European carriers also saw an increase in demand of 7.1% which is believed to have been supported by the economic recovery experienced across the region.

Capacity also reached an increase of 6.6%, with load factor rising 0.4% to 85.1%; the highest among all regions in the report.

In comparison, carriers in the Middle East experienced a 9.9% rise in demand during September; a decline from the 13.7% year-on-year growth saw in August, but nevertheless, still a healthy result - coupled with this, capacity also rose 12.9% to 75.7%.

Domestic travel was also popular during September, witnessing an increase of 7.8% compared to the same month during 2014. All markets, with the exception of Brazil, demonstrated a strong growth in these trips; with India, Russia and China enjoying the largest increase – with domestic capacity rising 6.1%.
