Domestic flights in Britain on the rise

Domestic Flights in Britain on the Rise
According to the latest report from the Great Britain Tourism Survey (GBTS), the number of Brits holidaying in the UK during July had increased by 11%.

This increase has in fact been the largest spike for this month since 2011.

Travelling Brits

In addition to Brits travelling throughout the country, the amount of cash they spent also increased by 5% to a whopping £2.35 billion; a record high for July since the survey originally began.

Meanwhile, year to date trips have also risen across the seven month period between January and July 2015 of 13% for England alone.

In fact Brits loved staying in their own country so much that 58.1 million trips were recorded in England during these seven months, representing a 12% increase, while there was an 11% rise in spend – taking it to £11 billion, compared to 2014.

In addition, the number of domestic holidays have also increased by 4% - to 24.4 million – when compared to 2014.

A positive story for Britain

The report also revealed that the number of trips and visits from friends and family in England has continued to grow – with July 2015 seeing a 19% increase, while spend went up by 22%.

However, trips across the country for leisure wasn’t the only reason so many Brits were taking to their travels; the volume of business trips taken had also increased by 5% in comparison to 2014, with a 3% growth in expenditure.

James Berresford, CEO at VisitEngland, said that these figures tell a “positive story” for the first few months of year, highlighting an increase in both trips and spend which is great news for the economy.

Moving forward it’s hoped that these figures continue to increase during the autumn and winter months, he added.

Mr Berresford concluded that the Rugby World Cup has no doubt boosted such trips.

If you’re thinking of travelling this year, don’t forget to book your budget travel insurance.
