Brits choose to book their holidays via tablets

Brits choose to book holidays via tablets
Brits are changing the way they book their trips abroad, with the use of tablets on the increase, according to a new study.

Choosing the perfect device

A survey by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) of 2,003 consumers found that 24% of online holiday bookers have purchased at least one trip away on their tablet in the last 12 months – compared to just 16% who used their smartphone; which were 17% and 18% respectively in 2014.

However, the research did find that laptops and desktops were still the most popular device for Brits when it came to online booking, with 91% choosing to use them to book their dream holiday.

Respondents said the reason behind opting for desktop and/or tablet was simply down to ease of use.

Meanwhile, the report also found that travel bookings on smartphones are behind other sectors, after an Ofcom survey found that 45% of Brits use their mobiles for other online purchases.

The younger generation leads the way

The research also highlighted that younger holidaymakers are the force behind the rise in bookings made via tablets – with 38% of 16-24 and 25-34 year olds having used one to book their getaway over the past 12 months, compared to just 24% and 27% respectively in 2014.

It was also highlighted that the younger generation are much more comfortable using a mobile to book their holiday, with 33% of 16-24 year olds booking this way – compared to just 7% of those aged 45-54.

Victoria Bacon, Head of Brand and Business Development at ABTA, commented that desktops remain the most popular device to book holidays online.

It’s clear that smartphones have a long way to go to level with desktops and tablets, however, with the number of youngsters now using their smartphone to book, mobile is expected to soon catch up, she added.
