Young Europeans choose Germany as top holiday destination

GirlYoung Europeans choosing to go abroad are now opting for Germany as their go-to holiday destination, according to new research.

IPK International and ITB Berlin have teamed up and found that trips to Germany has increased by a staggering 60%.

Changing trends for young Europeans

In 2014 alone Europeans aged 15-24 went on a total of 54 million foreign trips and spent 430 million night abroad.

However, in comparison to 2007, this number has dropped by 1%.

But, in 2007 the countries of choice were the likes of Spain, France, Italy and the UK. However, youth travel is beginning to change with holidays to these locations declining by 1-2% in 2014.

In contrast, Germany has seen an increase in popularity among these youngsters and is now the most popular holiday destination.

In total, the country recorded a 60% increase, with more than seven million young European travellers visiting its shores.

Meanwhile, other destinations including Croatia, Sweden and the Netherlands have also witnessed higher volumes of younger visitors.

Popular locations around Europe

In terms of the most popular cities, the following were found to be most popular with the younger generation:

  1. London
  2. Paris
  3. Copenhagen
  4. Munich
  5. Berlin
  6. Amsterdam

The research also found that the main reason for a third of younger holidaymakers making their way abroad was in search for sun, sea and sand.

With shopping, sunbathing and swimming being found as the most popular activities while on foreign shores.

However, city tours and trips were also popular, following just behind the love of beach holidays.

It was also found that just 12% of trips to Europe for this younger generation was for business purposes.
