Edinburgh Airport reaches new records

PlaneEdinburgh Airport has welcomed more than one million passengers through its doors during August alone, making it the busiest August since records began.

The airport has been so busy that this has been the fourth month in a row that’s seen over one million passengers fly through its doors.

Passenger numbers rising

In fact the airport saw a total of 1,158,794 passengers arrive and depart during August, an 8.7% increase when compared to the same month in 2014.

This number was made up of 467,120 domestic passengers, which is an increase of 8.9% compared to 2014; a figure that is thought to have been further boosted by services from London from Flybe and Ryanair.

The airport also saw an 8.5% increase to 691,674 international passengers walking through its doors this August.

It’s believed these figures were pushed higher by the increase in services to Dublin, Rome and Barcelona via Ryanair.

However, Edinburgh didn’t just welcome short-haul flights but also helped holidaymakers jet off around the world to the likes of New York, Doha and Abu Dhabi which have contributed to the strong figures.

A record breaking performance

Gordon Dewar, CEO of the Airport, said that this “record breaking performance” during August is indicative of just how successful Scotland is.

To witness more than four million passengers in just four months is “remarkable”, he added.

Mr Dewar explained that the team behind the scenes have demonstrated their commitment to the airport and have worked hard to cope with the increase in passengers.

Staying on top of passenger demand remains at the top of the agenda, he concluded.

These impressive figures follow the brand new opening of a stunning walk-through outlet from World Duty Free.

If you’re thinking of jetting off this year from Edinburgh Airport, don’t forget to book your budget travel insurance in advance.
