West Country set to sweep British Travel Awards

CornwallBrits opting for a staycation this year will be thrilled to know that West Country tourist resorts are set to win this year’s British Travel Awards.

With the only competition coming from Northumberland and Pembrokeshire, the likes of Devon and Cornwall could have this award in the bag.

Meanwhile, Bude and Woolacombe are fighting Bournemouth and Tenby tooth and nail for the title of the Best UK Coastal Resort.

Amazing coastlines and resorts

Malcolm Bell, Chief Executive of Visit Cornwall, said the county had won the award for the past six years and added it is a delight to be in with a chance again.

He explained that Cornwall is home to two “amazing” coasts, historic fishing harbours, moors, villages and Celtic heritage, helping to make the area feel unique from the rest of the country.

Mr Bell noted that for Cornwall to win this accolade for the seventh year – when no other location has won it more than two years in a row – will cement its position as the UK’s most popular holiday region.

Holding a special place in people’s hearts

The National Maritime Museum in Cornwall has also been nominated for the Best UK Heritage Attraction, while the Eden Project and South West Coastal Path National Trail are up for the Best UK Leisure Attraction reward.

Mark Hedges, Editor at Country Life Magazine, said Devon also holds a special place in many people’s hearts and is known for being a favourite location for family holidays.

For the first time ever, the South West Coast Path National Trail has been nominated as a finalist for the Best UK Leisure Attraction in the British Travel Awards (BTA). The Eden Project meanwhile could claim the title for a fifth consecutive year.

Winners will be determined by public votes and the results of this year’s awards will be announced at the BTA Gala Awards dinner in London on November 25th.

If you would rather go abroad this year than stay in the UK, remember to book worldwide travel insurance in advance.
