20% more Brits go backpacking abroad

EnvironmentMore British youngsters are choosing to ditch their CV and suits and jet off around the world than ever before according to STA Travel with backpacking trips up 20%.

Tough job market prompts travel

Glen Mintrim, STA Travel UK Managing Director, noted that the job market in the UK is still “tough” for youngsters – ultimately leading to more of them choosing to grab their walking boots and travel around the world.

As well as getting a healthy dose of culture and fun, these trips can also boost CVs with overseas work experience.

Data concerning the number of Working Holiday Visas applied for in popular destinations such as New Zealand confirms the trend with Mr Mintrim explaining that youngsters can see the world and earn extra cash in these vibrant countries.

Overall, STA Travel claim the top five destinations for those on a gap year are Australia, New Zealand, USA, Thailand and Peru.

However, Brits have been broadening their horizons over recent years by heading off to the likes of Bali, Fiji and the Philippines to experience something completely different to other backpackers.

Looking for a new experience

Mr Mintrim commented that today’s travellers are looking for guidance when it comes to choosing and exploring destinations as well as budgeting advice so they don’t miss out on key activities.

He added that planning a gap year takes a lot of work with many youngsters having a pre-planned list of places they’d like to visit and volunteering projects they would like to be involved in.

Bookings for volunteering projects have actually increased by 27% compared to this time last year while adventure tour sales are up by 20% – a boom which, according to Mr Mintrim, highlights a trend towards responsible travel amongst youngsters.

The most popular volunteering projects for backpackers include sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica, teaching children in Cambodia, and working with rescue elephants in Thailand.

If you’re getting ready to travel the world, remember to book your backpackers travel insurance before you leave
