Half of Brits look for English cuisine when booking holidays

Fish and ChipsUnadventurous Brits have revealed that they choose their holiday destination based on whether they can get their hands on English cuisine whilst away.

Over 50% of British holidaymakers surveyed admitted that having traditional English cuisine on their doorstep would determine where they would book a holiday while 22% said that food was the single most important aspect of their holiday.

The way to a Brit’s heart is through their stomach

The poll of 2,000 holidaymakers by TravelSupermarket found that it was men who were most guilty of only holidaying where they could get fish and chips with nearly a third admitting they would choose a destination based on whether they wanted to eat there.

Younger travellers proved to be more willing to try out the local culinary delights of their country of choice with 35% of 18-34 year olds saying they would sample the food.

Meanwhile 56% of those questioned said food was more important than nightlife while 19% put their stomachs before culture and tourist sites and 23% said it's more important than budget.

Cash-savvy Brits abroad

While home-sick Brits love to eat their own food, they are savvy when it comes to spending money on local cuisine.

Over two thirds said they had eaten street food while abroad with almost half believe that this gave them a more “authentic” experience of the culture.

A further 27% said they prefer to eat street food than wine and dine in hotel restaurants; Londoners in particular were constantly on the lookout for foodie adventures.

Cathy Toogood, Travel Editor at TravelSupermarket, said that food is a huge part of our lives so it is no wonder that this extends to impact our holiday choices.
