Spontaneous Brits choose shorter getaways

Bank NoteMini-breaks are becoming the holiday of choice for Brits who prefer spontaneous trips that let them get away from the stresses of everyday life without having to go too far afield.

Bucking the trend

American Express revealed the findings of their recent survey which highlighted that 61% of cash-strapped Brits are now choosing to take a short getaway in the UK at least once a year.

A further 32% head further afield to Europe to taste the culinary delights of our neighbours while 46% will spend more than five days away this year; highlighting just how popular mini-breaks are.

When asked why they prefer mini-breaks, 31% of Brits said it was because they felt more spontaneous and because it doesn’t take much planning or cost as much money.

Secret overspending

However, the survey also revealed that these money-conscious Brits were actually secretly overspending on their “spontaneous” mini-breaks with the average trip costing £431 for travel, accommodation, and food and drink.

Almost one quarter (24%) of respondents admitted to getting carried away with their spending while away by spending more than their budget on:

  • Gifts – £55
  • Days out – £64
  • Shopping –£92
  • Treats – £51

This brings the average total to a jaw-dropping £878 per person.

As a result, American Express are warning holidaymakers to keep an eye on what they’re spending whilst away and budget daily in order to remain in control of their cash.

The money firm also advises that if Brits do travel abroad for their short break that they exchange their money before arriving at the airport in order to get the best rates possible.
