Brits prefer to fly across their own country, says Google

Family TravellingWith the cheapest summer breaks being those based on home soil, British holidaymakers are searching for local holidays online and flying across their country to make the most of their breaks.

According to research published by Google, there has been a 16% increase in this type of activity over recent weeks as travellers choose to fly to UK destinations for a staycation.

Staycations on the rise

The 16% increase in online searches for staycations is also higher than last year when this type of break increased by 10%.

Google’s research found that flying was both more cost-effective and quicker than other forms of travelling to British holiday hotspots.

Long-distance journeys, such as travelling from Bristol to Inverness, take 10 hours by train with one change or just 90 minutes by plane as a direct flight.

This undoubtedly influences Brits’ decisions to holiday at home with the increase in domestic flights available from regional airports also likely to have an influence.

Competitive prices

Internal flights can also offer better value for money as fewer business travellers take to the skies during the summer months which helps to bring flight prices down.

Flybe, the largest UK domestic flight firm, has witnessed a 6% increase in passenger numbers over the past five years with boss Paul Simmonds saying summer months have lower demand and cheaper prices for families.

With this in mind, the likes of Google and other search engines are making it even easier for holidaymakers to find great deals with the use of their Google Flight Search.

So far, they have recorded Edinburgh and Belfast as the most popular staycation destinations for Brits based on common searches.

If you are thinking of travelling abroad rather than enjoying a staycation in Britain, remember to book family travel insurance in advance
