Young Brits choose culture over alcohol while abroad

Young Brits TravelingMany young British tourists are choosing to experience culturally immersive trips abroad rather than partaking in the party scene, according to the most recent research by holiday operator Contiki.

The research – of 2,000 individuals – found that young Brits aged 18-35 years are keen to make the most of their trips abroad by visiting cultural locations instead of joining in the local party scene.

In fact, curious Brits often visit multiple cultural attractions during a single trip and even make an effort to learn the local language and taste traditional cuisine.

Reaching cultural maturity

Only 20% of this age group said that partying the night away was important to them while 45% said they hoped to get the most from their trip by visiting multiple destinations in a single holiday.

More than half of those polled said they wanted to relax in the sun while abroad and a further 45% said they enjoyed trying local food and delicacies.

One fifth even try to learn the local language before departing in an attempt to help them dive into the native culture of their destination.

Tackling outdated stereotypes

Donna Jeavons, Sales and Marketing Director at Contiki, said that while young British travellers have previously had a poor reputation when abroad these findings highlight how times are changing.

She said that the poll provides clear evidence that youngsters want to experience a more cultural trip rather than partaking of stereotypical boozy breaks which may be associated with the age group.

And with a vast amount of English-speaking tour guides scattered throughout most holiday locations there is ample opportunity for Brits to brush up on their language skills, she added.
