Brits named third biggest spenders on holiday

British holidaymakers are the third highest spenders when on holiday, according to a survey by travel search website Momondo.

The company researched a total of 16 different nations and found Brits were the third most generous with their cash while away, behind China and Norway.

Spending extra cash

A fifth of Brits said they prefer to spend their extra cash on holidays rather than other hobbies or activities.

The survey – which polled 1,000 individuals – found that holidays (21%) were the preferred way of spending any extra money, ahead of:Beach Holiday

  • Making home improvements – 10%
  • Buying clothes – 14%
  • Dining out – 14%
  • Cultural events – 7%
  • Health and well-being – 6%
  • Buying new cars – 3%

Some 10% of those polled said they plan to spend between £4,000 and £8,000 while 2% were planning on spending above £8,000 on their annual holiday for 2015.

Moreover, 28% said that they plan to spend between £1,601 and £4,000 on their summer holiday this year, while a further 21% said they would pay between £801 and £1,600. Furthermore, 19% stated they only wanted to shell out between £401 and £800.

An additional 10% of respondents were planning on spending under £400 on their annual summer break away, just 1% plan to spend under £80 and 9% were unsure as to how much they were planning on spending this year.

The results also found that almost a third of Brits are keen to save money on their flights, in order to give them even more spending money for fancy accommodation, cultural experiences and dining out.

A spokeswoman at Momondo said the survey demonstrated that travelling is extremely important to the British as they are desperate to relax far away from their every day routines and responsibilities.

If you are thinking of travelling abroad this year, remember to book your European travel insurance in advance.
