Manchester Airport receives £1 billion investment

Manchester Airport receives £1 billion investment

Manchester Airport is set to receive a £1 billion investment to ensure it continues to thrive as a national asset, while maintaining its role as the UK’s global gateway from the north.

This £1 billion Manchester Airport Transformation Programme is set to see a total of 60 enhancements, to provide the millions of passengers that walk through its doors with contemporary state-of-the-art facilities.

Empowering the Northern Powerhouse

The airport is set to play a huge role in creating a “Northern Powerhouse” and already supports 20,000 jobs on site and a further 25,000 roles indirectly.

Once construction works are complete, the number of staff directly employed on site will double to 40,000

The Manchester Transformation Programme will include the following changes:

  • Expanding Terminal 2 to become the airport’s primary terminal building
  • Demolish the aging Terminal 1 building
  • Improve Terminal 3 to cater for increased numbers of passengers
  • Introduce new and enlarged airside transfer facilities
  • Introduce the latest technology in a new, larger security hall to screen more passengers at a quicker pace
  • Add 50 food and beverage outlets

George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, said the investment “is a massive vote of confidence in the North of England and in our plan to build a Northern Powerhouse”.

He added that the development is set to double the current airport’s capacity to ensure it continues to compete “with global airports across the world”.

Chief Executive of Manchester Airports Group, Charlie Cornish, said that Manchester Airport is continuing to “thrive as a national asset”.

She said the airport is continuing to work closely with its airline partners in order to ensure that all requirements for passengers are fully catered for.

Cornish concluded that over the next ten years, Manchester Airport will continue to develop as a “global gateway for the UK directly to and from the North”.

If you are looking to visit Manchester Airport and travel abroad this year, it is important to remember to book worldwide travel insurance in advance.
