Brits choose staycation over foreign holidays

Staycation2015 has witnessed a huge rise in the number of Brits choosing a staycation rather than a Mediterranean beach holiday, according to a report by VoucherCodes.

As Brits enjoy the hottest April on record, the UK is set to see the biggest holiday boost this year with 83% of Brits set to stay in the country for their summer holidays instead of travelling abroad.

Number one holiday location

With tempting cosmopolitan cities, country pubs and stony beaches,  the UK is set to be the number one holiday destination for Brits this year; beating Europe by 16%.

The trend for staycations has continued to rise over the past few years with a number of top British holiday spots enjoying a huge increase in visitors.

Cornwall has been voted as the perfect holiday destination by Brits for the fifth consecutive year as one in five chooses cream teas and surfing as their perfect holiday getaway for 2015.

As a result, Cornwall has witnessed a 16% rise in British tourists since 2010 and is getting ready to welcome an additional 14% more this year in comparison to 2014.

Travellers surveyed by VoucherCodes listed London as their second favourite holiday hotspot.

With 14% more holidaymakers set to visit the capital this year than in 2010, more than one quarter (26%) of staycations will actually take place in London.

Unsurprisingly, the Lake District also made it high on the list of best British holiday hotspots – taking third position.

The nearby Yorkshire Dales followed closely behind in fourth place while Bournemouth completed the top five.

Travellers spend £56 billion in the UK

As well as enjoying more holidays on home soil this year, British travellers are also expected to splash more cash during their breaks.

According to estimates, a whopping £56 billion will be collectively spent by holidaying Brits while they are on a staycation.

This breaks-down to mean the average holidaying Brit will spend £1,352 on their travel, accommodation and food.

Holiday clothing and accessories will also see Brits open their wallets as they prepare to spend an average of £181.61 each despite the fact they won’t be sampling tropical weather or travelling abroad.

If you’re planning on taking a staycation in the UK this summer or if you’d still prefer a trip abroad, it’s important to arrange family travel insurance in advance
