Manchester Airport breaks passenger record

Passenger PlaneManchester Airport broke its passenger record in the last financial year as 22.32 million travellers passed through its doors.

As a result the northern airport is aiming to exceed 23 million passengers by the end of the next financial year in 2016.

A magnificent achievement

This years’ figure beats the airport’s previous high – 22.26 passengers recorded in 2006 – by a massive 7.5% and relates to the number of travellers who used the northern gateway over a 12 month period.

As well as annual increases, the most recent data also showed considerable monthly changes. March 2015 witnessed a fantastic 10% rise in the number of passengers – something Ken O’Toole, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, described as a “magnificent achievement”.

He also referred to the recent achievements as a “historic milestone” for the airport and something which would provide a huge boost to the British economy.

O’Toole also commented that the airport had made a huge effort to work closely with airline partners to ensure the capacity and number of routes being made is always increasing.

This service is of particular importance to Manchester as demand for long-haul travel increase, he said.

Global gateway from the north

Saying it is “great news” that so many travellers are choosing to fly from the Manchester Airport, O’Toole also applauded the airport’s additional runway capacity which has the ability to offer “those customers and airlines an alternative to travelling via a congested London airport”.

Taking the position of “the UK’s global gateway from the north”, O’Toole concluded that Manchester Airport hopes to further capitalise on its success and continue its role as a leading travel choice.

Recent changes being made at the airport include an additional service to Hong Kong via Cathay Pacific as well as additional capacity on flights to Atlanta via Virgin Atlantic’s union with Delta.

Virgin Atlantic is also set to offer an additional service from Manchester to New York JFK in May 2015.
