Over 80,000 holidaymakers will travel this Easter

Easter Egg HuntHeathrow Airport will be carrying a record number of 800,000 travellers over the Easter holiday period this year, according to a recent announcement.

Huge increases in Brits going abroad

Heathrow has announced a huge 40% increase in the number of families with young children travelling abroad this Easter holiday.

The airport will see a huge 395,192 departures and 411,074 arrivals during the holidays; beating last year by 1.3%.

Heathrow isn’t alone in the huge increase in holidaymakers though. Gatwick Airport has already reported a record number of 480,000 travellers which represents an 11% increase from 2014.

Between Friday 03 April (Good Friday) and Monday 13 April, Gatwick Airport is expecting to see over 2 million holidaymakers pass through their gates; 4.7% more than last year.

Treasure hunts and face painting

As a result of the large number of travelling departing from British airports, both Heathrow and Gatwick are setting up treasure hunts, face painting and children’s parties to get everyone in the Easter spirit before their breaks.

Heathrow will be employing children’s TV favourite Peppa Pig as their Easter mascot whilst Gatwick will be throwing a Mad Hatters Tea Party in which characters from Alice in Wonderland will be joined by the famous Willy Wonka to hand out 500 Easter Eggs to excitable young passengers.

Easter bunnies will also be on hand for fun photographs with littler travellers.

Easter Monday will be busiest day

British Airways (BA) is expecting Easter Monday (06 April) to be their busiest day over the holiday period, with an expected 142,000 tickets booked.

The following Sunday (April 12) comes a close second with 135,000 tickets booked for families flying back home ready for the new school term.

The most popular destinations for long-haul flights according to BA are Los Angeles, New York and Miami while Edinburgh tops the short-haul flight list, followed closely by Barcelona and Amsterdam.

Gatwick’s top three destinations are the same as last year: Barcelona, Dublin and Malaga.
