Marrakech has been named the best holiday destination by Tripadvisor

Tripadvisor has named Marrakech the top holiday destination in the world in their annual Travellers’ Choice Awards for Destinations.

The awards based on millions of reviews and opinions have revealed a number of destinations in places such as Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia that have outperformed more traditional holiday spots in Europe and North America.

The number one spot

Marrakech claimed the number one spot as the best holiday destination in the world, for the very first time.

Cambodia’s Siem Reap also climbed seven spots and found itself in second place in the rankings with the likes of Istanbul, Hanoi and Prague making up the rest of the top five.

Whilst Rome found itself in second place in 2014 this year it dropped a total of five places to seventh while New York, often rated as the top USA location, failed to make it into the top ten for the second year running.

London also fell in the rankings, dropping from third to sixth, but remained one of only a few European cities to have retained a top ten position for five consecutive years.

An intoxicating experience

Tripadvisor also found that of the top ten destinations listed this year, Hanoi offered the best value for money when it came to hotel bookings.

Average room rates during the summer months will set you back just £30 a night compared to the whopping £162.25 average nightly charge incurred in London.

Tripadvisor’s Top Contributor of Photos in 2014, Steve Jackson, commented on the results of this year’s awards by highlighting the specific attractions of top choice Marrakech.

He described this travel hotspot as a city that “should be on everyone’s bucket list” before talking about how it is “rich in history and culture” and offers a truly “intoxicating experience” for visitors.

If you’re thinking of taking a trip to one of Tripadvisor’s best destinations, it is important to ensure that you have worldwide travel insurance arranged in advance.
