Britain sees a record number of cruise arrivals in 2014

UK CruiseA record number of passengers visited one of Britain’s 57 cruise docks during 2014, the most recent report by CruiseBritain claims.

922,000 passengers

A staggering 922,000 individual passengers found their way onto a luxury cruise ship in 2014 with a massive 110 vessels servicing the UK overall.

As many as 53 different cruise lines stopped off at a UK port, bringing people from all over the world to British soil.

This data follows reports from Clia which claim a significant 4.8% drop in the total number of British and Irish cruisers last year.

CruiseBritain found that although the number of passengers starting their cruise in the UK is lower, the number of ships including the country on their list of stops is actually growing.

This is thought to be at least partially driven by the uptake of “day call passengers” which CruiseBritain Chairman Daren Taylor explained was part of a wider trend within the industry.

“[It] is the continuation of a seven-year trend and one that we and our members work tirelessly to encourage,” he said.

A glowing testament

Taylor also noted that whilst the beginning of 2014 did see a fall in the number of passengers starting a cruise from the UK, the increase in ships visiting the country was very positive news.

P&O Cruises’ Britannia ship and Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas are just two examples of the luxury ships knocking on Britain’s door and Taylor feels they could “redress the balance” for the cruise industry.

He said that the fact Britain can attract such big name ships is “glowing testament” to its strength as a popular cruise destination but also highlighted how there is room for both the smallest and largest ships at the 57 ports located up and down the country.

With the cruise market expected to continue to grow, he concluded by saying he has every hope that the country’s strong appeal as a cruise destination will mirror this growth in future years.

If you’re looking to go on a cruise this year, it’s important to ensure you have worldwide travel insurance in advance.
