Weymouth to Cherbourg high-speed Ferry planned

FerryA new high-speed passenger ferry route between Weymouth and the French city of Cherbourg could be in operation as early as next year, new plans have revealed.

As Condor Ferries prepare to move its Channel Islands service to Poole in March, HighSpeedFerries.com has announced that it is in talks with the local borough to operate the above route from the town.

If plans for the new route are agreed the company revealed that it will operate two or three journeys during the peak season, with a total journey time of less than two hours. 90 jobs are also set to be created as a result of the move.

Speaking to the Dorset Echo, Director of corporate services, Jonathan Packer, said: “This is a real opportunity for Weymouth.

“Our proposal would create 90 jobs and a considerable financial contribution including incoming tourism to the local economy as well as retaining Weymouth’s ferry terminal.

“Weymouth is absolutely ideal following the upgrading of the ferry terminal in 2013 and its right that the town should see a return on the investment in improving those facilities.”

He went on to reveal that the route would be the shortest crossing ever on the Western Channel with terminal-to-terminal time comparable to Dover-Calais.

Ferry travel becoming increasingly popular

Research released at the start of the year revealed an upward turn in ferry passenger numbers between the UK and France and the rest of Europe, with passenger numbers climbing by 2.6% between 2013 and 2014.

The year-on-year increase translated to 39.01 million ferry passengers in 2014, compared to 38.01 in 2013.

The above data - released last month - forms part of ‘ferrystat’ figures released by the industry body Discover Ferries.

Speaking at the time, Discover Ferries director Bill Gibbons said:

“It has been another strong year for UK ferry industry, putting on more than a million passengers for the second year in succession, with us now in striking distance of 40 million passengers for 2015.”

If you are heading off on holiday in the coming weeks and months, it is important to organise multi-trip travel insurance in advance.
