More sunshine and warmer weather would make us the happiest - say 60% of Brits

People on beachBritish holidaymakers are often counting down the days until they can get their next fix of sun, sea and sand and revel in the feeling of holiday zen for a few days or more.

Now, new research commissioned by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater has revealed that warm climes and a feeling of happiness definitely go hand in hand for Brits abroad, with 60% revealing that more sunshine and warmer weather is a key ingredient in their happiness formula.

Questioning 2,000 people the research also went on to reveal that 85% of respondents link their happiness levels to weather conditions - a great excuse for a holiday in the sun! While 76.2% of Brits revealed that they would spend winter in a warmer climate if they were given the opportunity.

Overall two-thirds of Brits are so fixated on the idea of a sunny summer getaway that they start planning for their summer breaks in the winter months.

Further figures also showed that Brits are so inspired by the idea of spending their days soaking up the sun, that 6 out of 10 would choose a warmer temperature over lower taxes, a greater sense of community and much more.

When the figures were broken down geographically, Londoners (82%) were more likely than Scots (74%) to say they longed for a dose of winter sun.

Commenting on the figures, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater UK Director Venessa Alexander said:

“Clearly the weather we Brits are so famous for can have a negative long-term impact so getting away for a sunny break can offer physical and psychological benefits.

“To see 70% of our survey respondents say they think people in Florida are happier than in the UK because of their warm weather says a lot!”

To help Brits realise their dreams of a sun-soaked future, the tourism body is even offering a trip for four lucky Brits to the region in partnership with Virgin Holidays through the website YouNeedSun.com.

If you are planning a visit to the US, why not organise your worldwide travel insurance in advance?
