Summer holiday bookings surged in January, research reveals

Summer HolidayPlanning for our summer holidays has started early, according to the latest research, with holidaymakers using the first month of the year to lock in travel deals for June, July and August.

According to figures from industry analyst GfK, summer 2015 package bookings increased by 4% last week, with all-inclusive sales (+8%) and family bookings (+9%) also on an upward trend.

Improved figures were also seen for the following holiday types: holidays of between eight and 13 nights (up 8%), long-haul bookings (+8%) and short-haul bookings (+ 6%).

Further figures from the survey also revealed that there was a £7 year-on-year uplift in the average selling price for summer 2015 holidays at the end of last month.

Commenting on the buoyant state of the summer holiday market, Hays Travel owner John Hays said:

“We are up year on year. We have been busy at weekends, but there have been troughs midweek. The highs have been really high and the troughs lower than normal. But we have had a fantastic month in foreign exchange.”

Earlier this month travel association ABTA forecasted that a third of summer holiday bookings are set to be sold in the first two months of 2015.

January 2015 has already seen a strong early booking trend amongst ABTA members, with figures already up by as much as 30-50% when compared to the same period last year.

Cuts to Air Passenger Duty and the favourable pound to euro exchange rate are said to be just some of the factors that may have triggered a flurry of early bookings amongst UK travellers.

Commenting at the time, Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive said:

“A favourable exchange rate and a cut in Air Passenger Duty, combined with consumers starting to feel more positive about their finances, should benefit the travel market in 2015 and so it is very encouraging to see a strong start to the year.”
