Inspiring envy and impressing friends - some of the more unusual motivations behind holiday bookings

In times gone by, booking a break abroad would have been a happiness inducing activity in and of itself. Fast forward a few decades or so and modern Brits are no longer content to simply bask in the feel good factor that comes with having an overseas holiday in the diary.

Going awayIn fact, according to new research; holidaying Brits won't be satisfied with their holiday booking unless they've managed to make their nearest and dearest miserable in the process.

According to a survey conducted by MyVoucherCodes, the desire to ‘impress friends’ (23%) or make them feel ‘envious’ (37%) is among Brits' chief motivations for booking a holiday abroad.

Brits need to get one up in the holiday stakes may be prompted by a feeling that they aren't getting as much holiday time as those around them. 19% of those questioned argued that they didn't go on holiday as 'often' as their friends, whilst 28% felt that their friends are always showing off about their getaways.

Further figures from the survey revealed that a need to compete with friends isn't the only reason Brits pack their bags in search of foreign shores, with 29% of those surveyed revealing that they were keen to explore somewhere new.

Commenting on the survey findings, Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes, said:

“I'm a bit surprised to see how much Britons pressure themselves when choosing their holiday destination.

“I guess within a group of friends there's always going to be one who always has the nicest holidays of the group, which can sometimes be frustrating when you can't afford the same type of holidays.”

He went on to suggest that holidaymakers should book their holidays as far in advance as possible to take advantage of cheap travel deals.

If you are planning a holiday abroad, it is important to organise travel insurance in advance of your trip.
