Record number of Brits flocking to the sun-kissed beaches of Aruba

With temperatures in the UK plummeting, many Brits will be setting their sights on a beach holiday in balmier climes in the coming weeks and months.

BeachIt seems that rather than hopping over to the Mediterranean to get their annual fix of sun, sea and sand; UK travellers are heading further afield in search of the ultimate beachside break.

According to official figures the number of Brits enjoying a spell on the sun-kissed beaches of Aruba hit a record high in 2014, pushing past the 10,000 mark for the first time to reach a figure of 10,447.

UK visitor numbers to the Dutch Caribbean island climbed by more than 12% in 2014, helping overall tourist figures to Aruba to break through the one million mark.

Commenting on the figures, The Aruba Tourism Authority's UK Manager Joanna Walding said:

“We are delighted that Aruba continues to appeal so strongly to the UK and Irish markets. We have had great support from airlines and the UK travel trade which, combined with Aruba's natural appeal and the high standards of hotels and customer service on the island, clearly provides the right formula for attracting growing numbers of tourists.”

UK visitor numbers to Aruba may also be buoyed by the increasing number of flights operating to the island. As an example, Thomson Holidays and First Choice have announced that they will be extending their joint charter flight from London Gatwick to the island through to November 17th, rather than ending the season in October.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines also flies to Aruba five times a week, with departures available from 16 UK airports.

The island's enduring appeal is described in the following way on the aruba.com website: 'Adventure meets serenity on this island of contradictions – where the sun-kissed, sandy shores of the world-famous beaches intersect with the rugged desert of the northeast coast in Arikok National Park, and where Dutch influence meets American ease.'

Wherever you are heading to on holiday, it's important to organise worldwide travel insurance in advance.
