Tenerife for dining in and Turkey for dining out - research reveals biggest holiday mealtime savings

Food and drink is often one area that puts a significant dent in our travel budget and for those holidaymakers looking to head overseas for less in 2015, the results of new research could make for interesting reading. Eating Out

According to the new Cost of Eating out tool from Villa Plus Tenerife has emerged as the most savings savvy destination for those who prefer to whip up a meal at home on holiday, while Turkey takes the crown when it comes to the best destination for eating out.

The research revealed that whilst a lunch in costs £21 in Turkey, lunch out comes in a cost of £47. In contrast the gap between eating in and eating out in Tenerife is more marked, with the cost of eating out for dinner (€169) more than three times the cost of eating in (€53).

The rankings continued in the following way:

Commenting on the research findings, Simon Lifford at Villa Plus said:

“Eating in doesn't have to mean missing out on the great food destinations have to offer. In fact, it can be a great excuse to spend an afternoon exploring the fantastic local markets and picking up some traditional ingredients.

“Depending on the resort, you could save as much as €1,134 over a two week holiday by just eating in for one meal each day [based on an average saving on a evening meal across all resorts of €81.43 on eating an evening meal in compared to dining in a restaurant].”

The recent Post Office Travel Money study also revealed the cheapest destinations for a three-course evening meal for two with wine - with Prague (£22.18) taking the top spot, followed by Budapest (£25.33).
