Travelling solo – more and more Brits opting to travel alone

For some travellers, holidaying as part of a group is about as far from their perfect holiday equation as they can get. Rather than following the crowd in their destination of choice, solo travellers are happy to march to the beat of their own holiday drum in order to take full control of their travel experience. Now, new research from holiday companies that offer tours in the UK and abroad has revealed that single holidays are growing increasingly popular amongst UK travellers. This showed that just over a third (35%) of travellers preferred to go it alone as they live out their ultimate travel dreams.

This figure comes as part of an analysis of 100,000 holiday bookings carried out by 101 Holidays, which also forecasts that the above figure is set to increase to 38% in 2015.

The website has also compiled a series of 101 suggestions for solo travellers selected by the award-winning travel writer, Cathy Winston.

On the rise of solo travel she said: “Travelling solo has lost much of the lonely hearts stigma it once carried. And it's not limited to the 18-30 age group backpacking around the world, with single people of all ages feeling more confident about travelling alone, especially women.

“Our research showed that the average age of a solo traveller is now 54 and this is predicted to rise in future years.”

Figures from the analysis also showed that women take the lead when it comes to solo travel (58.3%), favouring walking holidays (64%) and African safaris (60%), while men are most likely to opt for cycling and sailing trips.

The research also revealed the top ten destinations that tick the boxes for solo travellers and these are as follows:

1. Greece

2. Portugal

3. St Lucia

4. Laos

5. Sri Lanka

6. Singapore

7. USA

8. Costa Rica

9. Turkey

10. Vietnam (as part of a small group tour)

“Increasingly, travel companies are waking up to the fact that single travellers are big business with a huge choice of solo holidays now on offer, and some are negotiating with hotels to remove the dreaded single supplements. This is a trend that looks only set to increase,” Winston added.

Wherever you are heading to in the world, it’s important to organise worldwide travel insurance in advance.
