45% of travellers say new runway should be built at Gatwick

Airport expansion plans are always a hotly debated topic and new research has revealed that it is one that everyday travellers are happy to wade into.Family Airport

According to the findings of a YouGov survey for Gatwick - which questioned 1,036 Londoners - 45% of travellers based in the capital would opt to build a new runway at Gatwick, compared to a lower figure of 39% for Heathrow.

Amongst the issues that swayed the vote in favour of Gatwick included a lower cost to the taxpayer and minimising air traffic, with the latter coming in at 49% compared to 24% for Heathrow.

38% of those questioned also felt that an expanded Gatwick could help to boost competition between airports and airlines, compared to a figure of just 26% for Heathrow.

Commenting on the survey findings, Gatwick chief executive Stewart Wingate said:

“In this crucial year for the expansion debate, the latest polling is a timely reminder of the growing support and momentum behind Gatwick as the right choice for the UK’s next runway.

“From greater competition and more destinations, to lower fares and less noise than Heathrow, the reasons for expanding Gatwick are compelling and numerous.

“By contrast, the taxpayer funds needed for Heathrow expansion give us 6 billion reasons why it is the wrong choice and the number of people to be newly affected by noise gives us hundreds of thousands more,” he said.

Research from ABTA at the end of last year also revealed that 45% of survey participants supported the idea that there should be an extra runway at either Gatwick or Heathrow, whilst 16% wouldn't back either option. A further 39% are neutral on this issue, perhaps overwhelmed by the wealth of information on both sides of the argument.

Whichever way travellers' vote swings, three options for airport expansion in the South East of England have already been shortlisted by The Airports Commission. These are as follows:

  • A third runway at Heathrow
  • An extension to one of the current runways
  • Or a second runway at Gatwick

Whichever UK airport you are flying out of, it's important to organise travel insurance in advance.
