One in five flights to and from UK are delayed

One in five flights to and from UK are delayedFew things are worse than the knowledge that our precious holiday time is being eaten into as a result of flight delays. However, according to the latest research this is exactly the prospect that some travellers will face as they pack their bags in search of some much needed rest and relaxation.

Which? Travel research claims that one in five flights to and from 10 UK airports don't depart according to schedule, with the definition of 'on time' ranging from being early to less than 15 minutes late.

Examining airlines according to their punctuality, it found that Monarch and Thomas Cook are the only two airlines that didn't meet the definition of 'on time'. Here, average delays stand at figures of 17 minutes and 18 minutes respectively.

Seven of the most punctual routes from the UK are operated by Ryanair and include routes to Gdansk in Poland and Sandefjord in Norway.

Flybe was found to be the airline with the least amount of delayed flights as average delays of only 10 minutes were recorded for flights to the UK between September 2013 and August 2014.

British Airways, Easyjet, Flybe, Jet2, Monarch, Thomas Cook, Thomson and Virgin were the airlines analysed as part of the study while the ten airports the research focused on were: Birmingham, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, London Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle and London Stansted.

On the research, Which? Travel Magazine Editor Jill Starley-Grainger said:

“Nobody wants to be held up by flight delays so airlines must do everything in their power to ensure they fly on time. If you've suffered a flight delay of more than three hours you could be entitled to compensation.”

Further figures from Which? Travel highlighted that more than a third (37%) of passengers had encountered a flight delay over the last two years, with up to a fifth of this group languishing in airport lounges for over three hours.

Despite this travel inconvenience, just 38% of this group claimed their compensation entitlement.

If you are heading off on holiday as the New Year approaches, it's important to organise travel insurance in advance.
