Thomson: Mallorca to Luton among the flight routes with the worst delays

Airport DelaysNothing is more frustrating for travellers than being held up from the holiday of their dreams due to a delayed flight. Now, the latest analysis has singled out some of the flight routes that are the worst performers when it comes to being on time - with routes to the US and the Canary Islands featuring heavily in the ranking.

Analysing on-time performance over the past few months Refund.me - described as ‘a service company that operates worldwide and helps air passengers to obtain compensation’ - identified the following flight routes a having the worst delays:

  • Thomson: Mallorca to Luton (46% on-time rate)
  • Virgin Atlantic: Gatwick to Orlando (47%)
  • Thomson: Mallorca to Gatwick (49%)
  • Virgin Atlantic: Las Vegas to Gatwick (50%)
  • Virgin Atlantic: Heathrow to Miami (50%)

Other less than impressive on-time records were held by Thomson flights from Manchester (on-time record of 56%) and flights from Jet2 (59% of flights arriving on time).

Commenting on the findings, Eve Buechner, founder and CEO of refund.me, said:

“Flight delays when going on holiday can be particularly frustrating, and can really cut into vacation time.

Unfortunately it is impossible to replace lost time, but at least we enable passengers to claim compensation from airlines when they are delayed by three hours or more – and for flights up to six years ago.”

Research released earlier this year from flightright.co.uk also revealed the routes that are most likely to leave passengers languishing in airport lounges rather than sunning themselves on the beaches of Europe.

Topping the ranking of flights with the most delays is London Gatwick to Barcelona-El Prat, with the top five completed by a number of other destinations in Spain and Portugal. This is as follows:

  • London Gatwick to Palma de Mallorca
  • Manchester to Palma de Mallorca
  • London Gatwick to Faro
  • London Gatwick to Málaga

If you are heading off on a holiday to Europe in the coming weeks and months it’s important to organise European travel insurance in advance.
