Big Apple home to the globe’s most expensive hotels

If you have the bright lights of New York in your sights, then you may need to pay a pretty dime or two to enjoy a stay in some of the Big Apple’s ‘must stay’ hotels.

New York

According to research from GoEuro, a European travel information website - New York takes the top spot when it comes to the destinations with the priciest hotel accommodation around the globe.

While average prices across a range of accommodation types come in at £157 per night in the city, travellers will need to stump up a whopping £427 for a stay in a five-star hotel.

The most wallet-friendly option for those visiting the city is a night in a hostel, which will set travellers back an average of £41.

The top ten ranking was completed by the following destinations, with prices applicable as follows:

Top 10 Ranking Air bnb ***** **** *** ** * Hostel Average
St. Moritz, Switzerland   £109 £438  £251 £122  £113  £77 £29 £117
Macao, China     £136 £225 £157 £123  £104 £99 £22 £107

Monte Carlo, Monaco £129 £325 £171 £102  £76  £20 £15 £85

However, the news isn’t all bad for holidaymakers who want to indulge in five-star luxury. The latest figures from Hotels.com - which analysed the average room prices paid by UK travellers in the first half of 2014 – revealed that hotel rooms with a 5-star rating can be snapped up in both Pisa and Warsaw for less than £100.

Commenting on the findings, Lizann Peppard from hotels.com, said:

“It is understandable that UK travellers seek the best value when it comes to going away. So it is great to see that there are many destinations fairly close to home which are still attainable for those looking to balance their budget and still live large.”

Wherever you are heading to in the world, it's important to organise worldwide travel insurance in advance.
