Lapsed skiers return to the slopes, but travel insurance slips down priority list

The traditional holiday formula of sun, sea and sand is quickly being replaced with sun, ski and slopes as the winter holiday season gets well and truly underway. Winter Holiday

According to the latest research from ABTA, it's not just regular winter sports enthusiasts that will be enjoying the delights of premium ski resorts on the continent and beyond.

Lapsed skiers are also set to return to the slopes in what remains of 2014, with ABTA’s ‘Get Fit for Ski’ - the go-to document for those wanting to brush up on their skills on piste.

Also joining returning skiers for the joys of the world's most loved ski runs are skiers aged 35 and under, with this group emerging as the most likely to take a winter sports holiday.

But whatever age group seasoned skiers fall in, the research reveals that they have one thing in common - a lack of awareness that travel insurance should be top of the holiday priority list.

ABTA's research shows that 19% of 16-24 year olds and 23% of 25-34 year olds think travel insurance is unnecessary.

The research comes as ABTA and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) warn skiers and snowboarders about the perils of heading off on holiday without winter sports travel insurance in place.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive said:

“As temperatures drop and people start planning for their winter holidays, we urge them to obtain adequate travel insurance as part of these preparations. Winter holidays often include activities that may not be covered by the usual travel insurance policies and holidaymakers should make sure that they are covered for everything they plan to do.”

Martin Redmond from the Foreign Office’s Know Before You Go Team, added:

“Whether you are an experienced skier or hitting the slopes for the first time, it is crucial to take out appropriate travel insurance. Those who don’t do so risk having to pay thousands of pounds in medical bills, so we urge British nationals going on a winter sports break to choose a policy that covers them for everything they want to do."
