Etihad Airways named world's leading airline

Adults TravelingEtihad Airways - the national airline of the United Arab Emirates - has been named as the World’s Leading Airline at the recent World Travel Awards.

This is the sixth consecutive year the airline has scooped the prestigious accolade. The airline also walked away with the crown in the categories of 'World’s Leading First Class’ and ‘World’s Leading Cabin Crew’.

On the airline's impressive achievement, James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said:

“Winning three of the industry’s highest accolades is a demonstration of our commitment to be best in class in every market in which we operate.

Etihad Airways strives for continuous innovation and improvement in product and service, because we know that is how we will maintain our industry leadership and create the best possible travel experience for our guests,” he said.

Among the highlights of the airline's work in 2014 are the following developments:

  • Launched new passenger flights to: Medina, Jaipur, Los Angeles, Zurich, Yerevan, Rome, Perth, Phuket, San Francisco and Dallas.
  • Increased frequencies to 23 destinations, including Dublin, Athens, Chennai, New York, Munich, Colombo and Chengdu.
  • Opened new Premium Lounge at Abu Dhabi airport - the airline’s biggest ever.

Other awards handed out on the night included the World’s Leading All-Inclusive Company, which went to Sandals Resorts International and the World’s Leading Green Destination, which went to Ecuador.

The World’s Leading Luxury Island Destination award was claimed by Anguilla - the Caribbean island that also played host to the Award's final gala ceremony.

“Hosting the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony is a very exciting milestone for Anguilla,” said Haydn Hughes, Anguilla Parliamentary Secretary with responsibility for Tourism and Sports.

“Tourism is a vital part of our economy, and we have been working closely with the local and international businesses community to implement a number of ground breaking initiatives over the last two years to generate tourism growth."
