Ryanair pledges APD refund on children's flights departing from UK from March 27th

Family HolidayThis year's Autumn Statement announcement spelled good news for family holiday plans in the New Year, with the Chancellor revealing the end of Air Passenger Duty (APD) charges for children under 12 from May 1st 2015.

Low-cost Irish airline Ryanair has become the latest operator to announce a refund on APD charges for flights for children aged between 2 and 11 years old in 2015, but has gone one step further in its quest to show its commitment to flyers.

The airline has revealed that it will be implementing a refund of this charge (amounting to £13 per applicable flight) for children's flights departing from the UK from March 27th 2015 onwards- a full six weeks earlier than any other airline.

The move will enable Ryanair's customers to enjoy partially APD-free holidays in time for the Easter break and gives an additional nod to Ryanair’s “Family Extra” service.

Commenting on the decision, Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kenny Jacobs, said:

“Ryanair welcomes Chancellor Osborne’s decision to scrap APD for children under-12 on flights departing the UK from 1st May 2015. To ensure even greater savings for the millions of UK families flying Ryanair at Easter, Ryanair will refund APD for all children who check in on flights departing the UK from 27th March 2015 onwards. Families flying Ryanair already enjoy the lowest fares and fantastic discounts with our “Family Extra” service and this will ensure even more UK families make even greater savings next Easter flying with Ryanair.”

Last week Thomson Airways revealed that it would refund APD where it no longer applied, as well as amending Thomson and First Choice holiday prices to reflect the changes.

Monarch Airlines followed suit also offering refunds for flights already booked for children under 12 years of age from May 1st 2015 and changing prices for all other flights after the above date.

CEO Andrew Swaffield said:

“We look forward to hearing the detail of this announcement and to working with industry bodies on its implementation.”

If you are heading off on a family holiday, it's important to organise family travel insurance in advance.
