London named as best city to ring in the New Year

We may not have got through the festive season yet, but our thoughts are already turning to the best spots to crack open a bottle of champers come midnight on December the 31st.

London named as best city to ring in the New Year

And the good news for Londoners is that you won't need to go much further than your own front door in order to enjoy the best NYE yet.

That's because the latest TripAdvisor survey has named the capital as the number one spot for a NYE countdown, with world travellers and Brits heading to one of the world's most iconic cities in search of a value for money way to see in 2015.

Figures show that the average nightly hotel price for New Year's Eve in London this year is £160.50 - this sits just 5% above the year round average.

In comparison average nightly hotel prices for New Year's Eve in Edinburgh comes in at £149.28 - 25% higher than average prices for the rest of the year.

Following London and Edinburgh's lead as the best places around the globe to welcome the New Year are New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Dubai and Blackpool.

The top ten ranking was completed by Berlin, Sydney and Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt.

Of this list, the Big Apple would provide the biggest hit to travellers’ wallets on a New Year break, with the city taking the proverbial crown when it comes to the highest average hotel prices on New Year's Eve. This comes in at a figure of £255.46 and is 18% higher than normal.

TripAdvisor spokesman James Kay said:

"Many destinations experience significant price hikes over the new year when it comes to hotels, so it's worth doing your research before deciding on where to head for the celebrations."

What will Brits be doing as the clock strikes 12?

Further figures from the research revealed that rather than enjoying the capital's NYE celebrations, 19% of UK travellers will be packing their bags for a destination abroad on December the 31st while just 12% will opt for an NYE ‘staycation’.
