More than 30 MPs support motion to scrap APD for children

A motion calling for the end of Air Passenger Duty (APD) charges for children aged between two and 11 has received the backing of more than 30 MPs.

Launched by a campaign group called Scrap the Tax on Family Flights; the campaign argues that bringing this charge to an end will help to make holidays more affordable for families.

Family HolidayA poll commissioned by the group and conducted by ComRes, found that two-thirds of those questioned were in favour of the motion. The poll highlighted that children under 12 were already exempt from charges such as VAT on clothing and some food.

Further figures from the poll also revealed that more than three-quarters (78%) of those questioned felt that a family holiday should feature in every child's life.

Three-quarters also believed that families in the UK play flight tax - while some in other countries don't, was unfair.

If the motion were to be realised a family with two children could make significant savings on their travel spend. As an example; a family holiday to Florida would attract a minimum APD charge of £94 per person, making savings of almost £200 if charges were excluded for the children.

Dale Keller, a spokesman for the campaign, said:

"The tax on children’s flights is a strain on family budgets.

"Given that the tax is levied at the highest rates in the world, this tax surely fails to meet the Government’s own “family test”.

"Scrapping Air Passenger Duty on children’s flights will help to make an annual holiday more affordable for hard-working and hard-pressed families, at a minimal cost to the Government."

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen, the sponsor of the Early Day Motion, added:

"Scrapping the tax on children’s flights is a great way for the Government to help by making holidays more affordable. I am calling on the Government to scrap the tax on children’s flights and help families enjoy the well-earned break they deserve."

If you are heading off on a family holiday, it's important to organise family travel insurance in advance.
