Costa del Sol voted as best value destination for winter sun

Apart from the merriment surrounding the festive season, short days and chilly nights mean winter in the UK can be something of a miserable affair.

Thankfully there are a number of locations around the globe where the words winter and sun can sit happily in the same sentence.

Now Post Office’s Winter Sunshine Report has revealed the locations where Brits abroad can get more bang for their winter sun buck, with the Costa del Sol taking the crown for the best value destination.

With the total cost of the eight travel 'basket' items below coming in at just £44.03 at one of Spain’s most popular coastal resorts, UK holidaymakers will have more than one reason to smile as they jet off for a break in the South of Spain.

The eight travel basket items are as follows:

  1. Cup of filter coffee at cafe/bar
  2. Bottle of local lager at cafe/bar
  3. Bottle/can of Coca Cola at cafe/bar
  4. Glass of wine at cafe/bar
  5. Bottle of mineral water (1.5L) at supermarket
  6. Sun cream at supermarket
  7. Insect repellent at supermarket
  8. Three-course evening meal for two (including a bottle of wine)

Other money-saving destinations around the globe this winter include Bali, Indonesia (£47.21), Algarve, Portugal (£47.87), Sri Lanka (£55.26) and Tenerife, Spain (£58).

And wherever UK travellers decide to travel in an attempt to offset the winter blues, the good news is they are likely to have more to put into their travel spending pot. According to the report, costs in 10 out of 12 worldwide destinations have fallen by up to 20%.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: “Families can look forward to seeing their holiday money stretch further in winter sun Eurozone resorts as well as in many of the popular long haul destinations we surveyed for autumn half term holidays.

“The trick is to do some advance holiday homework and pick a destination where resort prices are low and where the pound still packs a powerful punch.

“That's certainly true of resorts in Spain, Portugal and Cyprus, thanks to the strength of sterling, and people planning trips further afield can benefit from low resort charges in Sri Lankan resorts and the perennial favourite Phuket.”

Brits can also save on their travel spend by taking out budget travel insurance.
