Glasgow named as world’s friendliest city

Glasgow has been named the friendliest city in the world, according to a new ranking by travel guidebook series Rough Guide.

Scotland’s largest city claimed its number one position thanks to scores of votes from Rough Guides fans and reader. The city has also earned a string of other accolades in the past including number one UK destination “on the rise” by Tripadvisor and third best destination in the 2013 Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards.

2. Germany - 60,000
3. Spain – 26,000
4. Australia –31,000
5. Canada – 26,000

Taking second place in the rough guides ranking was Dublin, with Ireland’s capital being noted for having some of the friendliest people in the world’.

Rough Guides described the highlights of the city in the following way: “Spend a weekend enjoying the Georgian townhouses, squares and historic churches among some of the friendliest people in the world.”

Welcoming Dublin’s second place position, chief executive of Tourism Ireland Niall Gibbons said:

“It is the warm welcome and the ‘craic’ here that resonates with our overseas visitors and makes Dublin and Ireland such a great choice for a short break or holiday,” he said.

“This accolade by the readers of Rough Guides gives Tourism Ireland another wonderful platform to continue to promote Dublin and the island of Ireland throughout the world as a ‘must-see’ destination.”

Earlier this year readers of Condé Nast Traveler also voted Dublin as the globe’s fifth friendliest city.
