London Gatwick to Barcelona-El Prat named as route with most delays

Flights delays are among passengers biggest bug bears and nothing is quite as irksome as missing out on precious hours of holiday time.

Now new research from flightright.co.uk has revealed the routes that are most likely to leave passengers languishing in airport lounges rather than sunning themselves on the beaches of Europe.

Topping the ranking of flights with the most delays is London Gatwick to Barcelona-El Prat, with the top five completed by a number of other destinations in Spain and Portugal. This is as follows:

* London Gatwick to Palma de Mallorca
* Manchester to Palma de Mallorca
* London Gatwick to Faro
* London Gatwick to Málaga

And for those passengers who dread seeing the words “cancellation” flashing up on airport departure boards then the following list of routes with the most cancellations will at least offer travel weary passengers a heads up. These are as follows:

* London City to Paris Only
* London Heathrow to Frankfurt
* London Heathrow to Düsseldorf
* London Heathrow to Amsterdam Schipol
* London City to Zurich

Further figures from the research revealed that as many as one in five flights in the UK are delayed, with flights incurring a delay of more than three hours incurring an average wait time of four hours 42 minutes.

Commenting on the research results, and highlighting passengers’ rights in relation to delays and cancellations, Marek Janetzke, Managing Director of flightright, said: “UK passengers have up to six years to make a claim compensation so it's not too late to claim for flight delays over the summer.

“Often people are unaware that it only takes a three-hour delay to be eligible for compensation of around £200.”

“Potential compensation can reach up to £475 per passenger depending on the flight distance and delay time.”

“Unfortunately most passengers do not know about their rights.”

If you are heading off on a holiday to Europe in the coming weeks and months it’s important to organise European travel insurance in advance.
