What does the next decade hold for travel? €10 flights to the US apparently

In decades gone by hopping on a flight to the US wouldn’t have been possible without a few months of dedicated travel saving under your belt.

But with airlines increasingly competing for travellers’ attention the transatlantic market is hotting up with ever more affordable packages available to the US.

Earlier this year Norwegian launched one way flights to New York from £149, and now Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has recently offered another budget option into the mix.

Mr O'Leary revealed his hopes that Ryanair will launch budget flights to the US within the next ten years, with holidaymakers jetting off to the US of A in 2024 potentially bagging flights from as little as €10 one-way!

“We would love to do transatlantic flights and the business plan is there,” a Ryanair spokesman said yesterday (September 16th).

“The lowest fares would start from €10 and we would link 12 to 14 European cities with 12 to 14 US cities.”

The spokesman went on to outline that this offering was dependent on the availability of aircraft.

“It is entirely dependent on attaining long-haul aircraft at a viable cost and at the moment,” the spokesman said.

“There is a shortage of available aircraft.”

Speaking last year Mr O’Leary outlined a potential vision for the service."There is an opportunity with the EU-US open skies to, on a fairly big scale, connect 15-20 European cities with 15 of the big U.S. cities almost from day one. But you need a fleet of 30, 40, 50 aircraft and not two, four or six,” he said.

Official figures show that the US ranks second in the world when it comes to the number of international visitors.

The number of international visitors to the US has also climbed from a figure of 55 million in 2009 to 70 million in 2013, with each visitor spending an average of $4,500.

If you are heading off on a holiday to the US, it is important to organise worldwide travel insurance in advance.
