Scores of people have enjoyed a ‘3G’ holiday...but what it is?

When we see the acronym 3G the first thing that is likely to spring to mind is the feature that helps to power up our raft of smartphone applications.

However, 3G has taken on a completely different meaning in holiday circles and actually alludes to a trip with three generations of the family in tow.

Past research from Saga has shown that a quarter of grandparents have been on holiday with their children.

Grandparents, parents and children are all increasingly joining forces to enjoy the trip of a lifetime, with the added benefit that granny and grandpa may throw in a bit of babysitting in for free.

Research released earlier this year by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) has also revealed that many are turning to the Bank of Gran and Grandad to boost their holiday fund, with a quarter of those going on a 3G holiday revealing that their parents contribute to the cost.

Explaining the benefits of a multi-generational holiday arrangement at the time, Roger Ramsden, chief executive, Saga Services, said:

"I think it's fantastic that many generations are choosing to holiday together - there are so many benefits. Everyone gets the chance to relax and the adults can take it in turns going down the water slides with the kids or sloping off for some sangria and adult company. These days, people are so busy that getting everyone together can be almost impossible, so getting the chance to go away together and create memories might be just what every family needs."

Speaking to The Telegraph this week Dominique Foster who has just returned from spell in Spain with her partner, two-year-old son and parents, extolled the virtues of a 3G holiday.

“Having my parents with us meant that we weren't restricted to staying in or having to organise babysitters. In Spain, families take their children out late and cater for them, with restaurants that lay on bouncy castles or play areas for kids, so it really made a difference," she said.
