BA’s cabin refresh - what will it mean for passengers?

British Airways has announced details of a cabin refresh for some of its iconic 747s, with the offering for passengers set to be bigger and better.

18 selected 747s will have access to more than 130 movies and 400 TV programmes on larger, hi-resolution screens following the introduction of a state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system being installed from August 2015.

Much like the feel of a tablet passengers using Panasonic’s next generation eX3 entertainment system will be able to use touch and swipe gestures to move their way through screens.

Further changes taking place as a result of the upgrade include a universal power socket at every seat for customers in World Traveller Plus. The socket is able to be accept plugs from the UK, US and Europe. A personal USB socket to power phones and tablets will also be available for World Traveller customers.

Richard D’Cruze, British Airways’ in-flight entertainment and technology manager, said: “We know that in-flight entertainment is really important to our customers – being able to relax and watch a film or listen to music helps customers to pass the time enjoyably - so by installing this state-of-the-art equipment we will be able to deliver even more programming on board.”

British Airways’ engineers in Cardiff, who will carry out the refit, will also be completing a cabin interior refresh with alterations including changes to carpets and curtains to match the new aircraft colour pallet.

New style seat covers will also be utilised to match the appearance of those on the A380 and 787 while World Traveller and World Traveller Plus will enjoy added comfort thanks to new seat foams.

Kathryn Doyle, aircraft cabin interiors manager, added: “Our customers love our new aircraft, and we wanted to refresh the 747s in line with them as we know they have a special place in the heart of many of our customers. These aircraft will get some well deserved TLC and the improvements will be really noticeable to our frequent fliers.”

If you are flying off to a destination abroad in the coming weeks and months, it is important to organise travel insurance in advance.
